2024 Volvo XC90 Engine, Price, Specs – The arrival of the Volvo XC90 was a hint of great things ahead. On top of using Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) for the first time, it also made a significant investment in the brand’s Drive-E engine portfolio. Five years after it first came out, Volvo’s second-generation midsize SUV, called the 2024 Volvo XC90 and built on a new platform, is still its best-selling vehicle in North America, making it the best-selling Volvo vehicle in the country this year.
The XC90 is a roomy, elegant crossover that puts safety and comfort above sportiness, seating up to seven passengers across three rows. Three different powertrains are available to choose from: an FWD turbocharged four-banger T5 with 250 horsepower; an AWD hybrid T8 with a combined 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque.
Full-LED active headlights, a speed-limiting “Care Key,” and two rear USB ports are standard on all Volvo models for the 2017 model year. As part of a “Connected Safety” initiative, a Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert are sent through car-to-car communication. Additionally, all Volvo vehicles will be equipped with a top speed restriction capable of a maximum speed of 112 miles per hour beginning in 2024. Wireless charging, front park assist, and new wheel designs in a 19-inch size add to the XC90’s advantages. Last but not least, Volvo has renamed all of its hybrid T8 cars “Recharge” in the United States.
Interior
There’s plenty of room for everyone except those in the rear, and the focus is on comfort above all else. It comes in either a 6-or 7-seater configuration with three rows. Luxurious leather upholstery, warm color options, and an uncomplicated design are all characteristics of the XC90’s cabin, focused on a portrait-oriented touchscreen that contains almost all internal functions. There is standard four-zone temperature control, a panoramic sunroof, and power-adjustable seats on the XC90’s basic model, but the R-Design seats on this model’s R-Design grade are a little tight for individuals with bigger frames.
Engine
A turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a T5 nameplate provides 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque as part of the XC90’s Drive-E engine selection. With the addition of a supercharger, the T6’s outputs rise to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. Adding an electric motor to the T6 produces a combined 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque at the top of the series, which is now known as the Recharge. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the right axle, no matter what kind of engine is used.
The twin-charged T6 engine in our test vehicle gives enough oomph in every situation, but it isn’t the most smooth powerplant. Although Volvo has improved the XC90’s engine over the last several years, it may still sound harsh and agricultural under high engine loads, compared to BMW’s line of turbocharged four, six, and eight-cylinder engines, which are buttery smooth all the time.
Release Date and Price
The Volvo XC90 is available at a wide variety of prices. The basic price of the T5-equipped Momentum is $49,000, up to $55,600 for the T5 R-Design. Both vehicles may be outfitted with AWD for a $2,500 charge. The T6 Momentum costs $56,950 for the seven-seater and $57,450 for the six-seater, while the T6 R-Design costs $62,650.It costs $63,250 for a seven-seater and $500 more for a six-seater to get the T6 Inscription. Recharge’s plug-in hybrid version is available in three trim levels: the Recharge Expression, which starts at $63,450; the R-Design, at $69,150; and the Inscription, at $69,750.
